About the D&D class wheel

The wheel opens with 13 character classes from D&D, which is short for Dungeons & Dragons, a tabletop role-playing game. The fifth edition Player’s Handbook has 12 of them, Barbarian through Wizard, and the Artificer was added in a later book. Under “Choose a list”, “Player’s Handbook classes” leaves only those 12.

With every class loaded, each one has a 1 in 13 chance, which is 7.69%. The wheel picks a class name only. It does not build a character sheet, so everything else about your character is still up to you and your group.

For a whole table, switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” and let each player spin in turn. Each class can then be handed out once, so everyone at the table plays something different. Before the first spin, delete any class your group has agreed to leave out.

Ways to use a D&D class picker

  • Pick a class for your next character when you cannot decide what to play.
  • Hand out classes to a new group, one spin per player.
  • Set yourself a challenge: play whatever the wheel lands on, with no second spin.
  • Choose which class to draw, paint or write a backstory for today.

How to use the wheel

  1. Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
  3. Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.

How the pick is made

Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.

Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.

Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the D&D class wheel

Can I spin without the Artificer?
Yes. Under “Choose a list”, pick “Player’s Handbook classes”. That leaves 12 classes, each with a 1 in 12 chance (8.33%).
Where do the class names come from?
They were checked against the Wikipedia article on character classes in Dungeons & Dragons. The source and the date are shown under the list on this page.
Can I add a class that is not on the list?
Yes. Type it on a new line and the wheel redraws with one more slice. The wheel keeps your edited list in this browser, so it is there the next time you open the page.
Can the whole table watch the spin?
Yes. A “Full screen” button appears in browsers that support it, and the wheel also works on a phone you can pass around.
Is this site connected to Dungeons & Dragons?
No. The class names are listed only so the wheel can pick one. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by Dungeons & Dragons or its publisher.
