About the random team generator
The generator shuffles your list with the same random source the wheels use, then deals the names out one at a time, like cards. That keeps the teams as even as the numbers allow: sizes never differ by more than one.
With 12 names and 2 teams you get 6 and 6. With 13 names and 3 teams you get 5, 4 and 4.
Press “Shuffle again” for a fresh split of the same names, and “Copy teams” to paste the result into a chat or a document.
When random teams help
- Gym class and recess, where picking captains leaves someone last.
- Group projects, so the same friends do not always work together.
- Trivia night, pickup games and office team-building.
How to use the team generator
- Type or paste the names, one per line.
- Set the number of teams and press “Make teams”.
- Press “Shuffle again” for a new split of the same names, or “Copy teams” to paste the result somewhere else.
How the teams are made
Your browser shuffles the whole list with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys, and then deals the names to the teams in turn, the way cards are dealt.
Dealing in turn is what keeps the teams even: no team ever ends up more than one name larger than another. Who lands with whom is left to the shuffle.
The names stay in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and there are no accounts.
Questions about the random team generator
- How does the team generator split the names?
- It shuffles the whole list at random, then deals names to the teams in turn. Every possible split is equally likely, and team sizes differ by one at most.
- What happens when the names do not divide evenly?
- The first teams get one extra player. For example, 13 names in 3 teams gives teams of 5, 4 and 4.
- Can I keep two people on separate teams?
- Not automatically. Press “Shuffle again” until they land on different teams, or split them by hand after the shuffle.
- Can I make balanced teams by skill?
- The generator does not know skill levels. One way around it: run it once for your strongest players and once for everyone else, then combine the results.
