About the letter wheel
The full wheel holds the 26 letters of the English alphabet, so each letter has a 1 in 26 chance. That is not how often letters appear in real words: on this wheel Q and Z come up exactly as often as E and T.
“Vowels” leaves A, E, I, O and U. “Consonants” leaves the other 21 letters; Y is counted as a consonant here.
For a game where letters must not repeat, switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” and the wheel works through the alphabet.
Games that start with a random letter
- Categories: spin a letter, then everyone writes a city, an animal and a food that start with it.
- Letter-sound practice: spin, say the sound, name a word.
- Alphabet scavenger hunt: find something in the room that starts with the letter.
- Picking a first letter for a baby-name or team-name brainstorm.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the letter wheel
- Does every letter have the same chance?
- Yes. With all 26 letters on the wheel each one has a 1 in 26 chance, about 3.85%.
- Can I spin only vowels or only consonants?
- Yes. Choose “Vowels” for A, E, I, O and U, or “Consonants” for the other 21 letters.
- How do I avoid getting the same letter twice?
- Switch on “Remove the winner after each spin”. Each letter leaves the wheel after it is picked.
- Can I remove hard letters like Q, X and Z?
- Yes. Delete those lines from the list. The wheel and the odds update as soon as you edit it.
