About the dog breed wheel
The full wheel holds 56 dog breeds. “Choose a list” splits them by typical adult size: 20 small breeds, 16 medium breeds and 20 large breeds.
The list was written for this site, and every breed on it is spelled out on the page under its size group. A teacher or a parent can read all of them there before the wheel is used in a lesson or at a party.
In a class, tick “Remove the winner after each spin” before students take turns at the dog breed spinner. Each breed leaves the wheel once it is picked, so no two students end up with the same dog.
Things to do with a random dog breed generator
- Drawing prompt: spin a breed, find a photo of it and sketch the dog.
- Guessing game: one player spins in secret and the others ask yes-or-no questions until they name the breed.
- Research starter: spin a breed and write down five things you can find out about it.
- Made-up pet: spin a breed for the dog in your story, then give it a name.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the dog breed wheel
- Does the wheel have every dog breed?
- No. It has 56 breeds, and there are many more than that. Add any breed you like on a new line.
- How were the size groups decided?
- They are rough everyday groups by typical adult size. A dog you know may be bigger or smaller than the group its breed is listed in, because dogs of one breed vary in size.
- Can the wheel tell me which dog to get?
- No. It picks a breed name at random and knows nothing about you, your home or any real dog. It is made for games, drawing and school projects.
- Can I add mixed breeds or my own dogs?
- Yes. Type any names you want, one per line: mixed breeds, the dogs on your street or your own pets.
- Can I spin only small breeds?
- Yes. Press “Small breeds” under “Choose a list” and the wheel reloads with those 20, each with a 1 in 20 chance.
