About the animal wheel
The wheel holds 98 animals. Each one belongs to exactly one of six groups: 37 mammals, 19 birds, 10 reptiles, 6 amphibians, 10 fish, 16 invertebrates.
The groups follow biology rather than looks. Dolphins, whales and bats are mammals; penguins are birds; seahorses and stingrays are fish; spiders, octopuses and starfish are invertebrates.
Two extra wheels cut across the groups: 10 farm animals and 21 ocean animals.
What to do with a random animal
- Drawing prompts: spin, then sketch the animal in two minutes.
- Charades: act it out without making a sound.
- A research starter: each student spins an animal and finds three facts about it.
- “Would you rather be…”: spin twice and defend your choice.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the animal wheel
- How many animals are on the wheel?
- 98. The full list is on this page, grouped by class.
- Can I spin only mammals, or only birds?
- Yes. Choose a class above the list: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish or invertebrates. There are also separate farm and ocean wheels.
- Why is a dolphin under mammals and not fish?
- Dolphins breathe air, are warm-blooded and nurse their young, which makes them mammals. The wheel groups animals by biological class, not by where they live.
- Can I add an animal that is missing?
- Yes. Add a line with its name. If you edit the list, the wheel keeps your version in this browser.
