About the flag wheel
The wheel holds 195 flags, one for each country on this site’s country list. It opens with all of them. Under “Choose a list” you can load a single continent instead: Africa has 54 flags, Asia 48, Europe 44, North America 23, South America 12 and Oceania 14.
Each entry is a country’s name followed by its flag as an emoji. The emoji is built from the country’s two-letter code, and the page draws it with a small flag font of its own, so the flag shows on a Windows computer too. The codes were read from the Wikipedia article on ISO 3166-1 alpha-2, and the source and the date are shown under the list.
With all 195 flags loaded, the labels on the slices are hidden and the result window shows the country and its flag. Load a single continent and its list is short enough for every label to show. For a quiz round with no repeats, switch on “Remove the winner after each spin”, and a flag that has come up leaves the wheel.
Ways to use a flag spin
- Draw or color the flag the wheel picks.
- Pick a country for a school project, one spin per student.
- Spin a flag, then find that country on a map or a globe.
- Choose the country for a classroom culture day or a themed dinner at home.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the flag wheel
- Will I see the flags on a Windows computer?
- Yes. Windows has no flag emoji of its own, so this page loads a small flag font and draws the flags with it. If that font cannot load, most browsers on Windows show the country’s two-letter code instead, for example FR next to France.
- Can I use it as a guess the flag game?
- Yes, if one person does the spinning. Each entry shows the country’s name together with its flag, so the wheel does not hide the answer. The spinner describes the flag and the others guess the country.
- Which countries have a flag on the wheel?
- The 193 member states of the United Nations and the two observer states, Palestine and Vatican City. Territories, regions and organizations are not on the wheel.
- What is the chance of getting one particular flag?
- With every flag loaded it is 1 in 195, or 0.513%. Load one continent and the line under the wheel shows the new chance for each flag on that list.
