About the country wheel

The wheel lists 195 countries: the 193 member states of the United Nations and its two observer states, Palestine and Vatican City.

Continents follow the United Nations geographic regions. That puts Russia under Europe, and Turkey, Cyprus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Kazakhstan under Asia. North America includes Central America and the Caribbean.

With all 195 countries on the wheel the labels are too small to read, so the wheel hides them and the result window shows the country. Choose a continent for a wheel you can read.

What a random country is good for

  • Geography practice: spin, then find the country on a blank map.
  • A dinner theme: cook something from wherever the wheel stops.
  • Flag, capital or neighbor quizzes: one spin per question.
  • Picking the setting for a story or a school project.

How to use the wheel

  1. Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
  3. Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.

How the pick is made

Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.

Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.

Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the country wheel

How many countries are on the wheel?
195: the 193 United Nations member states plus the two UN observer states, Palestine and Vatican City.
Can I spin countries from one continent only?
Yes. Choose Africa (54), Asia (48), Europe (44), North America (23), South America (12) or Oceania (14) above the list.
Why is Russia listed under Europe and Turkey under Asia?
Each country appears once, under the region the United Nations statistics division assigns it to. Countries that span two continents are placed in one of them by that system.
Why can’t I read the names when all countries are loaded?
195 slices are too narrow for text, so labels are hidden above about 150 entries. The result window always shows the country that was picked.
