About the baby name wheel

The wheel opens with 200 first names: the 100 most popular names for girls and the 100 most popular for boys among babies born in the United States from 2020 through 2025, as listed by the U.S. Social Security Administration. “Girl names” and “Boy names” under “Choose a list” load one list at a time.

The agency’s page lists the 200 most popular names for girls and the 200 most popular for boys, and this wheel uses the first 100 of each. Each spelling counts as its own name, so Sophia and Sofia are both here. The agency notes that its list for the 2020s covers six of the decade’s ten years so far, so the final ranking for the decade can still change.

To draw a shortlist, switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” and spin once for every name you want. A name that has come up leaves the wheel, so nothing repeats, and the Results tab lists your picks in order.

When a random first name helps

  • Parents-to-be can each draw a shortlist, swap, and cross off the names they would not use.
  • Writers can spin once for each character who still needs a first name.
  • Kids can let the wheel name a new doll, a stuffed animal or a pet.
  • Teachers can spin for the names in a word problem or an example sentence.

How to use the wheel

  1. Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
  3. Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.

How the pick is made

Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.

Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.

Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the baby name wheel

Is the name at the top of the list more likely to come up?
No. The page lists names in the agency’s order of popularity, but every name on the wheel has the same chance: 1 in 200 (0.5%) with all names loaded, 1% on one list.
Why are there no names on the slices?
With more than 150 names on the wheel the labels are hidden, and the result window shows the name. Either single list is short enough for the labels to show.
Can I add a name that is not on the list?
Yes. Type it on a new line in the list, and delete any name you have ruled out. Your edited list is saved in this browser.
Is this site connected to the Social Security Administration?
No. This site is not connected to the agency. It only reads the public list of names.
