About the character wheel
This wheel builds an original character from 6 lists, one for each part of the character. The wheel opens with “Kind of being”, a list of 16 that runs from human and robot to fox spirit and living scarecrow. The other lists are “Role or job”, “Main trait”, “Flaw or fear”, “Goal” and “Home”.
Each list is a wheel of its own. Pick one under “Choose a list” and its entries replace the ones on the wheel; one spin on every list gives a full character to draw or write about. The parts are drawn separately, so they do not have to match: a ghost can turn out to be a baker who is afraid of the dark.
The wheel shows one list at a time, so keep a pencil nearby and write each result down before you load the next list. The Results tab also lists every pick of your visit in order, which puts the whole character in one place once the last spin is done.
What to do with a random character wheel
- Drawing prompt: spin all 6 lists, then sketch the character they describe.
- Story starter: take the goal and the flaw as your plot and write the first page.
- Tabletop role-playing: spin a background for a new hero, or for a stranger the players meet on the road.
- Class writing exercise: each student spins a character and introduces it in three sentences.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the character wheel
- Does this wheel pick characters from shows or games?
- No. This page builds a new, original character instead. It has no existing characters from shows, games or books, only lists of parts to combine.
- Where do the entries come from?
- They were written for this site, not taken from a book, an app, a game or another website. Every entry is shown on this page under its list, so a teacher or a parent can read them all before a class spins.
- Can one character have two traits or two flaws?
- Yes. Spin that list a second time and keep both results. If the same entry comes up again, spin once more.
- Can I fit the lists to my own story world?
- Yes. Before you spin, delete the entries that do not belong there, such as “Space mechanic” in a fairy tale, and type your own on new lines.
