About the hobby wheel

The wheel carries 90 hobbies in 6 groups: creative, outdoor, games and puzzles, making and fixing, music and performance, and collecting and learning. Spin them all together, or press one group under “Choose a list”.

Each entry is one to three words that name a hobby, such as origami, kayaking or coin collecting. The wheel does not tell you what a hobby needs or how to begin, so treat the pick as a place to start reading.

To narrow things down, work in two rounds. Spin five times and read the picks off the Results tab, type just those five into the list, then spin once more for the hobby to try first.

Ways to spin for hobby ideas

  • A free weekend: spin once and spend an afternoon trying whatever comes up.
  • A month of new things: spin four times with “Remove the winner after each spin” on, one hobby for each week.
  • A class project: each student spins a hobby and reports on what it involves.
  • A rainy day: press “Games and puzzles” and spin for something to play.

How to use the wheel

  1. Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
  3. Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.

How the pick is made

Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.

Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.

Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the hobby wheel

Does the wheel know which hobbies suit me?
No. It draws one entry at random: with all 90 hobbies loaded, each has the same 1 in 90 chance. It knows nothing about your age, your free time or where you live.
Where does the list of hobbies come from?
The hobby list was written for this site and was not taken from a book, an app, a game or another website. The page shows every hobby under its group, so a parent or a teacher can go through them before anyone spins.
Can I take off the hobbies I already do?
Yes. Delete their lines and the wheel redraws without them. Your edited wheel is still here the next time you open this page in the same browser.
My hobby is not on the list. Can I add it?
Yes. Type it on a line of its own, anywhere in the list, and it joins the wheel as one more equal slice.
