About the movie wheel
The wheel holds 59 widely known movies in 9 genres. It is a starting list, not a ranking: the picks are ours and lean toward films most people can find on a streaming service or at a library.
“Family night” gathers the 26 movies on the list that work for mixed ages. Check the rating before you press play; the wheel does not know who is in the room.
The most useful version of this wheel is your own: paste your watchlist over ours, one title per line, and let the wheel choose from movies you already meant to watch.
How to use it on movie night
- Everyone adds one title to the list, then one spin decides.
- Spin a genre’s wheel when you know the mood but not the film.
- Work through a watchlist with “Remove the winner” switched on.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the movie wheel
- How many movies are on the wheel?
- 59, listed on this page by genre. Choose a genre above the list to spin among those titles only.
- Can I use my own watchlist?
- Yes. Delete the list and paste your own titles, one per line. The wheel saves your list in this browser.
- Are the family night movies suitable for young children?
- They are movies commonly watched with kids, but ratings and families differ. Check the rating and a parents’ guide for the title the wheel picks.
- Does the wheel tell me where to watch the movie?
- No. It only picks a title. Search the title in your streaming apps or your library’s catalog.
