About the music genre wheel
Every spin starts from all 69 genres unless you pick a family. Under “Choose a list” there are 7: pop and rock, hip hop and R&B, electronic and dance, jazz and blues, country and folk, classical, and Latin and world.
The entries are genre names and nothing else: no artists and no songs. Each genre is filed under one family, and the whole list is printed on the page under those headings, so a teacher or a parent can check it before a class.
Building a playlist? Tick “Remove the winner after each spin” and spin once for every track you need. Each pick leaves the wheel, so no genre lands on the playlist twice.
Uses for a random genre generator
- Choosing what to listen to: spin, then search your music app for that genre.
- Songwriting prompt: spin a genre and write one verse in that style.
- Dance prompt: spin from “Latin and world” and make up a short routine to that kind of music.
- Listening club: each member spins a genre and brings one track from it to the next meeting.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the music genre wheel
- Does the wheel play music?
- No. It picks the name of a genre and shows it in the result window. Finding and playing music of that kind is up to you.
- Can I spin for a song instead of a genre?
- Not from this list, which holds genres only. Press “Clear list”, type your own song titles one per line, and the wheel picks among them the same way.
- Where does the list of genres come from?
- The genre names were chosen and typed up for this site. Nothing was lifted from a book, an app, a game or somebody else’s website.
- Why is my favorite genre missing?
- A list of 69 cannot cover every genre there is. Add yours on a line of its own and it gets a slice like the rest.
- Is every family equally likely to come up?
- No. Every genre has the same 1 in 69 chance, so a family with more genres on the wheel is more likely to come up. “Pop and rock” has 12 slices and “Classical” has 8.
