About the NFL position wheel
The wheel opens with 21 positions used in American football, the game the NFL plays. Under “Choose a list” you can narrow it to one unit: 8 positions on offense, 7 on defense or 6 on special teams.
Teams line up in different formations, so not every position on this list is on the field for every play. Some teams also use other names for some positions, so a name you know from your own team may be written another way here.
If your game does not use every position, delete the extra lines before the first spin. The wheel keeps the shorter list in this browser, so it is ready for the next game.
Ways to use a football position wheel
- Starting a career in a football video game: use it as a random NFL position generator and play whatever comes up.
- Handing out positions before a backyard or flag football game, one spin per player.
- Quizzing a friend: spin a position and ask which unit it belongs to.
- Choosing the main character for a sports story or drawing by spinning a position first.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the NFL position wheel
- Is this site connected to the NFL?
- No. This site is not affiliated with the NFL or with any team. The league’s name is here only to say which game the positions come from.
- Where do the position names come from?
- They were checked against the Wikipedia article “American football positions”. The source and the date of the check are shown under the list.
- What are the chances of getting quarterback?
- With every position loaded, quarterback has a 1 in 21 chance, the same as any other slice. On the “Offense” list it is 1 in 8.
- Can every player get a different position?
- Yes. Turn on “Remove the winner after each spin” and a picked position leaves the wheel when you close the result window. Keep spinning until everyone has one.
- Can I add a position that is not on the list?
- Yes. Type it on a new line and it becomes one more slice with the same chance as the others.
