About the sports wheel
The wheel opens with all 60 sports at once. The 6 groups are team ball sports, racket sports, water sports, winter sports, and martial arts and combat, plus one group for track, field and gymnastics. Each group has its own button, and every sport sits in one group only.
The list was written for this site, and each name on it was checked against an encyclopedia that has an article about that sport. A slice shows the name and nothing else: no rules, no teams, no word on where the sport is played. That makes the wheel a starting point, and the reading comes after the spin.
For a gym class, first delete the sports your school has no gear or space for, which may be the whole Winter sports group. Your shorter list stays in this browser, so it is still there for the next class. Switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” to plan a term of units, and no sport comes up twice.
Ways to use a random sport generator
- A PE warm-up: spin, then the whole class acts out that sport for thirty seconds.
- Recess games: kids spin Team ball sports and play whatever comes up with the balls on hand.
- Report topics: each student spins once with the winner removed, so no two reports cover the same sport.
- A weekend plan: spin to decide which sport the family finds and watches together.
- Sports charades: one player acts out the pick without words while the others guess the name.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the sports wheel
- Can I spin only winter sports?
- Yes. Press “Winter sports” and the wheel holds only those 10. Press “All 60 sports” to bring every group back.
- Why is a sport I play missing from the wheel?
- The list is a pool of 60 sports, not every sport there is. Type yours on a new line and it gets a slice of its own, the same size as every other slice.
- Does the wheel explain how to play each sport?
- No. Each slice is only a name. Look the sport up after you spin; every sport on this list has an encyclopedia article.
- Can I make a wheel of only the sports our school offers?
- Yes. Press “Clear list”, type your school’s sports one per line, then use “Copy link to this wheel” to send that exact list to the class.
