About the NHL team wheel

The wheel opens with all 32 NHL teams (NHL is short for National Hockey League). Under “Choose a list” you can narrow it to one conference, “Eastern Conference” or “Western Conference”, or to a single division: “Atlantic”, “Metropolitan”, “Central” or “Pacific”.

Below the wheel, the page lists every team by division, so you can check which teams share a division before you narrow the wheel. The team names were checked against the list in the Wikipedia article on the National Hockey League, and the source and the date are shown under that list.

To hand out teams to a group, switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” before anyone spins. A team that has been picked leaves the wheel, so everyone gets a different one. The Results tab lists every pick of the visit in order, which settles who got which team.

Ways to use an NHL team picker

  • Hand out teams for a hockey video game night, one spin per player.
  • Pick a team to root for when you are new to hockey and have no favorite yet.
  • Quiz a friend: spin a team, ask which division it is in, then check the list below the wheel.
  • Set up a made-up matchup by spinning “Eastern Conference” once and “Western Conference” once.

How to use the wheel

  1. Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
  3. Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.

How the pick is made

Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.

Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.

Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the NHL team wheel

Are all the NHL teams on the wheel?
Yes. All 32 teams are loaded when the page opens: 16 from the Eastern Conference and 16 from the Western Conference, split into 4 divisions.
What is the chance of landing on one team?
With every team loaded it is 1 in 32, or 3.13%. A conference wheel makes it 1 in 16 (6.25%), and a division wheel makes it 1 in 8 (12.5%).
Can I take teams off the wheel?
Yes. Delete a team’s line from the list and the wheel redraws without it. Your edited list of teams is saved in this browser for your next visit.
Can my friends spin the same set of teams?
Yes. “Copy link to this wheel” makes a link that carries your list of teams inside it. Whoever opens that link sees the same wheel.
Is this site connected to the NHL?
No. The team names are on the list only so the wheel can pick one of them. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the National Hockey League or any team.
