About the color wheel spinner
This is a spinner for picking a color at random, not the artist’s color wheel that shows how colors mix. It starts with 12 basic colors, each with the same chance.
“Rainbow” loads the seven colors of the rainbow in order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
“All 24” adds shades such as maroon, navy, turquoise and lavender. If you type a color name the wheel does not know, its slice takes a color from the site’s own palette.
Things to do with a random color
- Art prompts: draw something using only the color you spin, plus black and white.
- Color scavenger hunt: find three things in the room in that color.
- Choosing who gets which game piece, team bib or marker.
- Picking a color of the day for a preschool class.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the color wheel spinner
- Which colors are on the wheel?
- The starting wheel has 12 basic colors. “Rainbow” has the 7 rainbow colors, and “All 24” includes every color listed on this page.
- Does every color have the same chance?
- Yes. Each color has one slice of the same size, whichever list you load.
- Can I add my own colors?
- Yes. Add a line with the color’s name. Known color names are painted in their own color; other names get a color from the site’s palette.
- Is this the color wheel used in art class?
- No. An artist’s color wheel arranges colors to show how they relate and mix. This page is a random picker whose options happen to be colors.
