About the Hogwarts house wheel
The wheel holds the 4 houses of Hogwarts, the school in the Harry Potter stories: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. There is one list, so there is nothing to choose before you spin.
Each slice is painted in a color close to the house’s own: red for Gryffindor, yellow for Hufflepuff, blue for Ravenclaw and green for Slytherin. The house names were checked against the Wikipedia article on Hogwarts, and the source and the date are shown under the list.
To split a group evenly, write each house on as many lines as it has places. For 20 people, that means each house on five lines. Then switch on “Remove the winner after each spin”: each spin takes one place off the wheel, and the last person gets the last place.
What to do with a random Hogwarts house
- Split party guests into house teams, one spin per guest as they arrive.
- Put a class into 4 groups for a reading week and call each group by its house.
- Settle a costume choice: spin once and wear that house’s color.
- Pick sides for a quiz night, then keep score by house.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the Hogwarts house wheel
- Is this a quiz that finds my Hogwarts house?
- No. This Hogwarts house generator picks one house at random and asks no questions. The result does not depend on anything about you.
- What are the chances of getting each house?
- Each house has a 1 in 4 chance, which is 25%. That is true on every spin, whatever came up before.
- Can I spin again if I wanted a different house?
- Yes. Press “Spin again” in the result window. Unless you removed a house, all 4 are still on the wheel, so you may land on the same one twice.
- Can I make one house come up more often?
- Yes. Write that house on a second line and it gets two slices, which makes it twice as likely as a house written once.
- Is this site connected to Harry Potter?
- No. The house names are listed only so the wheel has something to pick. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the author, publishers or studios of the Harry Potter books and films.
