About the month wheel
All 12 months of the year are on the wheel, January to December. Each one has a 1 in 12 chance, which is 8.33%. Below the wheel, the page lists the months under their quarter.
The buttons under “Choose a list” narrow the wheel to one quarter of the year: “January to March”, “April to June”, “July to September” or “October to December”. A quarter has 3 months, so each of them then has a 1 in 3 chance, or 33.3%. That suits a plan with one event per quarter, where only the month is still open.
To hand out every month once, such as one month per host of a monthly book club, switch on “Remove the winner after each spin”. A month then leaves the wheel as soon as its result window closes, and the Results tab lists the months in the order they were picked.
Uses for a random month generator
- Class calendar: each group spins for the month it will draw and decorate.
- Spot check at work: spin a month and review that month’s receipts or reports.
- Language class: spin a month and have a student say and spell its name.
- Story prompt: set the next scene of your story in the month the wheel picks.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the month wheel
- Is this also a random day generator?
- No. It picks a month, not a day. Every month has the same chance here even though months run from 28 to 31 days, so a random month is not the same thing as a random day of the year.
- Can I leave some months off the wheel?
- Yes. Delete those months from the list and the wheel redraws with the ones that are left. The line under the wheel then shows how many months remain and the chance of each.
- Can I put the months in another language?
- Yes. Type the names over the English ones in the list, one month per line. Your translated list is saved in this browser for this page and is there on your next visit.
- Can the wheel pick a quarter instead of a month?
- Yes, in one extra step. Spin the full wheel and take the quarter the month belongs to. Every quarter has 3 months on the wheel, so every quarter has the same chance.
