The wheel picked

About the random number 1 to 20 wheel

The wheel is loaded with the whole numbers from 1 to 20, 20 in all, one slice each. On every spin each number has the same chance, 1 in 20 (5%), and the line under the wheel shows it. You will not find the numbers printed again lower on the page: the list box next to the wheel holds them all.

This is a range page, so there are no ready lists to pick from. The “Lowest number” and “Highest number” fields above the list of entries start at 1 and 20. Enter other values, press “Fill the wheel”, and the wheel loads that range instead. Any whole numbers will do, negative ones included, up to 1,000 numbers.

To call on a class of twenty by seat number, switch on “Remove the winner after each spin”. A number leaves the wheel once it is drawn and cannot return until the wheel is refilled, so after 20 spins every seat has been called exactly once.

Things to do with a number from 1 to 20

  • Pick which of twenty worksheet questions the class solves next.
  • Roll for a tabletop game when the twenty-sided die has gone missing.
  • Choose a flash card, a page or a problem numbered 1 to 20.
  • Play a guessing game: one person spins in secret and the rest guess the number.

How to use the wheel

  1. Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
  3. Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.

How the pick is made

Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.

Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.

Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the random number 1 to 20 wheel

Is this the same as rolling a twenty-sided die?
The odds are the same. Twenty numbers with the same chance give the same odds as a fair twenty-sided die.
Can a number come up more than once?
Yes. Each spin is independent, so the number you just got has the same 1 in 20 chance on the next spin. Switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” if a number should come up only once.
How do I keep track of the numbers that were drawn?
Open the Results tab. It lists every pick of your visit in order, and “Clear results” empties it when you start a new round.
Can I leave out numbers that are already used?
Yes. Delete those lines from the list box and the wheel redraws with the numbers that are left. The line under the wheel then shows the new count and the new chance for each number.
