The wheel picked

About the age wheel

On this page each number stands for an age in years. The wheel holds the whole numbers from 1 to 100, one slice each, so every age has the same chance on every spin: 1 in 100 (1%). The line under the wheel says so.

The ages are meant for make-believe: a character in a story, a role-play persona, a round of a party game. The wheel draws a number at random and knows nothing about you or anyone else.

You do not have to use the whole range. Above the list of entries, type new ends in “Lowest number” and “Highest number” and press “Fill the wheel”: for example 18 to 65 for a grown-up character, 13 to 19 for a teenage one, 1 to 12 for a child. The line under the wheel then shows the new chance for each age.

Ways to use the age picker

  • Give a made-up character an age before you write the first line of the story.
  • Set the age of a role-play persona, then build the rest of the persona around it.
  • Story prompt: spin an age and write one day in the life of someone that old.
  • Party game: spin an age, then everyone shares a memory from that age or a plan for it.

How to use the wheel

  1. Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
  3. Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.

How the pick is made

Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.

Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.

Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the age wheel

How do I give several characters different ages?
Switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” and spin once per character. An age leaves the wheel once it is drawn and stays off until the wheel is refilled, so no two characters get the same age.
Can I get an age of 0, or an age over 100?
Yes. Put 0 in “Lowest number” for a newborn, or raise “Highest number” for a character older than 100, then press “Fill the wheel”. Any range of whole numbers works, up to 1,000 numbers.
Can I spin for an age group instead of an exact age?
Yes. Press “Clear list” and type the groups yourself, one per line, such as Child, Teen, Adult and Senior. Each line becomes one slice, and all slices are the same size.
Can I make some ages more likely than others?
Only by writing them twice. An age typed on two lines has two slices, so it is twice as likely as an age written once.
