About the category wheel

The wheel opens with all 84 categories, each a prompt such as Farm animals, Pizza toppings or Things that are round. Under “Choose a list” you can keep one group instead: “Living things”, “Food and drink”, “Places”, “Everyday life”, “School” or “Odd and fun”.

The wheel gives a category and the players do the rest: they name things that fit it. The categories were written for this site, not copied from a book, an app, a game or another website, and each one is listed on the page under its group, so a teacher or a parent can read them all before the game.

For a game with several rounds, switch on “Remove the winner after each spin”. A category that has been played then leaves the wheel, and every round gets a new one. With younger players, start on one group, such as “Food and drink”, and move to the full wheel later.

Games to play with a random category generator

  • Go around the circle naming things that fit; a player who repeats an answer or runs out is out.
  • Give everyone paper and one minute, then count who wrote the most answers that nobody else has.
  • Pair the category with a letter, so every answer has to start with it.
  • Split into two teams and take turns: the first team to go silent loses the round.

How to use the wheel

  1. Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
  3. Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.

How the pick is made

Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.

Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.

Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the category wheel

Can I check the categories before my class plays?
Yes. Every category is listed on the page under its group, so you can read them all first. Delete any line you would rather skip, and the wheel redraws without it.
Can I add my own categories?
Yes. Type each one on a new line in the list, for example a topic your class is studying. Your edited list is saved in this browser.
Can I spin a category and a letter together?
Not on one wheel. Open the letter wheel in a second tab, spin both, and name things in the category that start with that letter.
What if a category is too hard for our group?
Press “Spin again” in the result window for a different one. Press “Remove from wheel” instead if you do not want it to come back during this game.
