About the eye color wheel

The wheel holds 24 eye colors in two groups. “Natural colors” has 11, from dark brown, amber and hazel to green, blue and gray. “Fantasy colors” has 13 for made-up characters, from red, gold and violet to silver, white and black.

Each slice is painted in a color close to the one it names, so the wheel shows every color as well as naming it. Screens show colors differently, which makes the slice a guide and not an exact match. The names and shades were chosen for this site. They are not a medical or scientific classification.

Set the wheel up for the kind of character you are inventing. Choose “Natural colors” for a person in a realistic story, or “Fantasy colors” for a dragon, a robot or an alien. If some colors are already taken or do not fit, delete those lines before you spin.

Characters that need an eye color

  • Fill in the eye color line on a role-playing game character sheet.
  • Start a drawing with the eyes: spin, then reach for the pencil or marker closest to the slice.
  • Settle the eyes of a custom doll or an avatar before you pick the hair and the outfit.
  • Write the pick into the first description of a new story character.

How to use the wheel

  1. Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
  3. Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.

How the pick is made

Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.

Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.

Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the eye color wheel

Can I add an eye color that is not on the wheel?
Yes. Add it to the list on a line of its own. If the wheel does not know the color name, that slice takes a color from the site’s own palette.
How do I give a character two different eye colors?
Spin twice, once for each eye. If the two must not match, press “Remove from wheel” in the first result window before the second spin.
What is the chance of landing on blue?
It is 1 in 24 with every color loaded (4.17%). On “Natural colors” alone it is 1 in 11 (9.09%), and each color on “Fantasy colors” has a 1 in 13 chance (7.69%).
Can every character in a group get a different eye color?
Yes. Switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” and each picked color leaves the wheel when its result window closes, so no two characters end up with the same one.
