About the hair color wheel
The wheel opens with all 28 hair colors. “Natural colors” narrows it to 14, from black and dark brown through auburn and ginger to gray and white. “Dyed colors” loads the other 14, among them pastel pink, teal, navy blue, lavender and rose gold.
Each slice is painted in a color close to the one it names, so the wheel shows the colors as well as naming them. One screen can show a shade differently from another, so treat a painted slice as a guide to the hair color, not an exact match.
For a cast of several characters, switch on “Remove the winner after each spin”. A color that has been picked then leaves the wheel, so no two characters end up with the same hair.
What to do with a random hair color
- Give a new original character a hair color before you draw them.
- Spin “Dyed colors” for a doll, a mascot or a fantasy creature.
- Pick the hair for the next character you build in a video game.
- Set an art challenge where everyone draws the same face with the color the wheel picks.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the hair color wheel
- Is this the color wheel that hair stylists use?
- No. Hair stylists use a different kind of color wheel, one that shows which tones sit opposite each other. This page is a random picker whose entries are hair colors.
- Can I add a hair color that is not on the list?
- Yes. Type it on a new line and it gets its own slice. If the wheel does not know that color name, the slice takes a color from the site’s own palette.
- What is the chance of each hair color?
- With all 28 loaded, each color has a 1 in 28 chance, or 3.57%. Load either group alone and each of its colors has a 1 in 14 chance, or 7.14%.
- Where do the color names and shades come from?
- They were chosen for this site. The list is not a salon color chart, and the shade on a slice is only close to the color it names.
