About the random number 1 to 3 wheel
The wheel holds 3 slices: 1, 2 and 3. There are no ready lists to choose from on this page and no separate list printed below the wheel: the list box next to the wheel holds all 3 numbers.
Each number has a 1 in 3 chance on every spin, or 33.3%, and the line under the wheel says so. Spins are independent, which means the number you just got is as likely as the other two the next time.
To put three players in order, switch on “Remove the winner after each spin”. The first player spins for a turn number and that number leaves the wheel. The second player spins between the two that are left, and the third player takes the last one.
Choices that come down to 1, 2 or 3
- Decide who goes first, second and third when three people play.
- Number three doors, boxes or cups and let the wheel choose which one to open.
- Hand out three chores: number them, switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” and spin once per person.
- Choose between three movies, three snacks or three ways home.
- Break a three-way tie at the end of a game.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the random number 1 to 3 wheel
- Is 2 more likely because it sits in the middle?
- No. All 3 slices are the same size and each number has a 1 in 3 chance (33.3%). Where a number sits on the wheel makes no difference.
- Can I choose between three things that are not numbers?
- Yes. Number your options 1, 2 and 3 before you spin. You can also replace the numbers in the list box with the names of the options, one per line.
- Can I make one number more likely than the others?
- Yes. Type that number on a second line in the list box. It then has two of the four slices, so it is twice as likely as each of the other numbers.
- Can I add a fourth number?
- Yes. Type 4 into “Highest number” above the list and press “Fill the wheel”. The wheel then has four slices and each number has a 1 in 4 chance.
