About the theme wheel
The wheel opens with all 84 themes mixed together, each with a 1 in 84 chance. Under “Choose a list” you can narrow it to one group: “Party themes”, “Spirit week days”, “Drawing themes”, “Decades and eras”, “Colors and patterns” or “Make-believe”.
The themes were written for this site. They are short and open on purpose, so one theme can serve more than one job: “Outer space” works for a costume, a cake or a sketchbook page.
For a spirit week, choose “Spirit week days”, switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” and spin five times, once for each school day. A theme leaves the wheel after it is picked, so no day repeats.
Put the random theme generator to work
- Spin “Party themes” three times and let the guest of honor choose among the three.
- Drawing challenge: everyone gets the same theme and ten minutes to draw it.
- Dress-up day: spin “Colors and patterns” for a theme people can build from their own closet.
- Costume contest: spin “Decades and eras” to set the decade or era.
- Writing prompt: spin “Make-believe” and set a short story there.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the theme wheel
- Are the themes okay for school?
- Yes. No theme names a show, a movie, a game or a character, and none is based on a culture, a religion or an ethnic group. The full list is printed on this page under its groups, so a teacher or a parent can read every theme first.
- Can I add our own theme ideas?
- Yes. Type each theme on a new line. To favor one, write it on two lines: it then has two slices and is twice as likely as a theme written once.
- How can a group vote on the theme?
- Spin three times and put the three results to a vote. The Results tab lists every pick of your visit in order, so nobody has to write them down.
- Can I share the wheel with a class or a committee?
- Yes. “Copy link to this wheel” puts the list inside the link, so everyone who opens it gets the same themes, with any you added.
