The wheel picked

About the random number 1 to 8 wheel

This wheel is cut into eight equal slices, one for each whole number from 1 to 8. Nothing else sits on it: there are no extra lists to choose from, and the numbers are not printed a second time lower on the page. All 8 live in the list box next to the wheel, and each has a 1 in 8 chance on every spin, or 12.5%.

A tabletop game that calls for an eight-sided die can borrow this wheel when the die has gone missing. It is a wheel, not a die, but its eight slices are the same size, so every number from 1 to 8 has the same 1 in 8 chance. Read the number in the result window and carry on with the game.

For a race on a track with eight lanes, list the runners and switch on “Remove the winner after each spin”. Spin once per runner: the number is that runner’s lane, and it drops off the wheel, so two runners never share a lane. Press “Fill the wheel” before the next heat to bring all eight lanes back.

Where eight numbers fit

  • Drawing places 1 to 8 in a bracket of eight players, so nobody chooses their own first opponent.
  • Choosing which of eight teams answers the next question in a classroom review game.
  • Handing out eight seats at a dinner table, one spin per guest with the winner removed.
  • Deciding which of eight stations a small group visits first during a field day.

How to use the wheel

  1. Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
  3. Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.

How the pick is made

Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.

Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.

Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the random number 1 to 8 wheel

Can I use this as an 8 sided spinner for a board game?
Yes. Spin whenever the game asks for a number from 1 to 8. The slices are all the same size, so each number has a 1 in 8 chance.
Does 8 have the same chance as 1?
Yes. Both ends are on the wheel, and they share the same 12.5% chance with every number between them.
Is 0 on the wheel?
No, it starts at 1 and ends at 8. If your game counts from 0, set “Lowest number” to 0 and “Highest number” to 7, then press “Fill the wheel” for eight slices from 0 to 7.
Can I look back at the lanes that were already drawn?
Yes. The Results tab lists every pick of this visit in order, so you can read the whole lane draw after the last spin. “Clear results” empties it before the next heat.
