About the random number 1 to 9 wheel
Nine slices, one per digit from 1 to 9, fill this wheel, and zero is not one of them. The page offers no ready lists and does not print the digits again below; the list box next to the wheel holds all 9. On every spin each digit has a 1 in 9 chance, which the line under the wheel shows as 11.1%.
Leaving out zero helps in a math drill. A multiplication fact with 0 in it always comes out to 0, and a two-digit number cannot start with 0. Spin twice and write the digits side by side, and you get a two-digit number with no zero anywhere in it.
To play tic-tac-toe by spin, number the nine squares of the grid 1 to 9, left to right and top to bottom, and switch on “Remove the winner after each spin”. Each player spins on their turn and marks the square with that number. A square that is taken has already left the wheel, so no spin can land on it again. “Fill the wheel” sets up a new game.
Nine-way picks with the 1-9 wheel
- Setting a batting order for a team of nine: each player spins once with the winner removed, and the number is their spot in the lineup.
- A times-table drill where you spin two digits and say the product before the next spin.
- A quiz of nine questions written on slips, with the wheel choosing which slip gets read aloud.
- Choosing a square on a 3 by 3 board of sight words or art prompts numbered 1 to 9.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the random number 1 to 9 wheel
- Why does this wheel start at 1 and not 0?
- Because it covers the digits without zero. If you need 0 as well, set “Lowest number” to 0 and press “Fill the wheel” for ten slices, or open the 0 to 9 page.
- Can it pick more than one digit at a time?
- No, each spin picks one digit. For a three-digit number, spin three times and write the digits in the order they come up; the Results tab keeps them in that order.
- Can I take out the digits we already practiced?
- Yes. Delete their lines from the list box, or switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” so each digit drops off once it comes up.
- Will the wheel keep my shorter list next time?
- Yes, in this browser. An edited list is kept for this page on your next visit, but it does not move to your other devices. To go back to all nine digits, set the fields to 1 and 9 and press “Fill the wheel”.
