About the shape wheel

The wheel has 26 shape names in 2 groups. “Flat shapes” holds 16, such as circle, triangle and hexagon. “Solid shapes” holds 10, such as cube, sphere and cone.

The names are the ones used in school geometry, so you will find rhombus and trapezoid here but not star or heart. All of them are listed on the page under their group, where a teacher or a parent can read them before a lesson.

With young children, start small. Press “Clear list”, type only the shapes the child already knows, such as circle, square and triangle, and add a new name when you teach one. The page keeps your list in this browser, so your shape spinner is ready for the next lesson.

Games to play with a random shape generator

  • Shape hunt: spin, then find something in the room that has that shape.
  • Draw it: spin a flat shape and draw it on paper or in the air.
  • Build it: spin a solid shape and make it from clay or blocks.
  • Flat or solid: spin a shape from the full wheel and ask which group it belongs in.

How to use the wheel

  1. Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
  3. Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.

How the pick is made

Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.

Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.

Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the shape wheel

Does the wheel show a picture of the shape?
No. The wheel shows the names of shapes as words and does not draw them. Keep a shape chart or a box of blocks nearby so children can see the shape too.
Can every child get a different shape?
Yes, for up to 26 children. Tick “Remove the winner after each spin” and each shape leaves the wheel once it has been picked.
Can I add shapes such as star or heart?
Yes. Type each name on a new line and it gets a slice the same size as the rest.
Where do the shape names come from?
The list was typed up for this site with the standard names. It was not lifted from a book, an app, a game or another website.
What is the chance of landing on a flat shape?
It follows the counts: 16 of the 26 slices are flat shapes and 10 are solid. Each single shape has the same 1 in 26 chance.
