About the lunch wheel

The wheel starts with all 51 lunches, sorted into 5 groups: sandwiches and wraps, soups and bowls, salads, hot lunches, and packed lunchbox plates. Each group has its own button, so on a cold day you can spin only soups, and on a school morning only lunchbox plates.

Every entry is a plain dish that can be made or packed at home, with no brands and no restaurant chains. Each group also has at least one lunch that needs no bread, such as a baked potato with toppings or hard-boiled eggs and fruit. Read the list once before you spin and delete anything nobody at home will eat.

To plan a school week, switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” and spin five times. Each lunch leaves the wheel once it comes up, so the five days get five different lunches. Write them down, or check the Results tab, which keeps them in order until you close the page.

Lunch wheel ideas for home, school and work

  • Packing school lunches: spin the “Packed lunchbox plates” group the night before.
  • Working from home and tired of the same sandwich: spin once at noon and make whatever lands.
  • An office potluck: each coworker spins once with the winner removed, so no dish shows up twice.
  • Letting each kid spin one lunch for the week, then shopping for all of them in one trip.

How to use the wheel

  1. Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
  3. Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.

How the pick is made

Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.

Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.

Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the lunch wheel

Are there lunches without meat?
Yes. More than a third of the entries have no meat, such as lentil soup, a Caprese sandwich and rice balls with edamame. Delete the others if you want a meatless wheel.
Can I add our own lunches to the wheel?
Yes. Type each one on a new line and the wheel redraws as you go. Your version is saved in this browser and is there the next time you open the page.
How is this different from the food wheel and the dinner wheel?
This wheel holds only lunches you can make or pack at home, and no entry has exactly the same name as a dish on those two pages. The Food Wheel covers every meal of the day, and the Dinner Wheel is for evening meals.
Does the wheel come with recipes?
No. Each slice is a dish name and nothing more. The wheel picks what to make, and how you make it is up to you.
