About the snack wheel

The wheel starts with 58 snacks. “Choose a list” narrows it to one of 4 groups: “Fruit and vegetables” (16), “Crunchy and salty” (15), “Sweet snacks” (12) or “Filling snacks” (15), the one to spin when dinner is still a long way off. Every snack is also listed further down the page under its group, so a parent or a teacher can read them all first.

The snacks are named by kind, never by brand. “Potato chips” means whichever bag is in your cupboard and “Yogurt” means whatever is in your fridge, so the wheel works with the food you already have. The list was written for this site and is not taken from a book, an app, a game or another website.

Before the first spin, delete the lines for snacks you do not have in the house. The wheel redraws without them and keeps your shorter list in this browser, so it is still there the next time someone is hungry.

When to spin for a random snack

  • After school: give each kid one spin and let the wheel settle who eats what.
  • Lunch box: spin “Fruit and vegetables” once and “Filling snacks” once, then pack both.
  • Movie night: switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” and spin three times for three different snacks.
  • Grocery run: spin five snacks and add them to the shopping list.

How to use the wheel

  1. Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
  3. Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.

How the pick is made

Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.

Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.

Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the snack wheel

What if we don’t have the snack the wheel picks?
The result window has a “Remove from wheel” button: press it and spin for a different snack. The wheel redraws without the one you are out of, so the next spin has to land on something else.
Can I add my family’s favorite snacks?
Yes. Type each one on its own line, brand names included if you like, and it gets a slice the same size as the rest. Write a snack on two lines to make it twice as likely.
Does the wheel take allergies into account?
No. It picks at random and knows nothing about who is eating, so check for allergies before sharing food.
Where are the cookies and the ice cream?
On the dessert wheel. This list stops at snacks, and desserts, candy and drinks each have a wheel of their own on this site.
