About the random number 1 to 12 wheel
Twelve equal slices carry the whole numbers 1 to 12, and that is all the wheel holds. No ready lists wait under a button, and the numbers do not reappear further down the page: all 12 sit in the list box beside the wheel. Every spin gives each one a 1 in 12 chance, which the line under the wheel shows as 8.33%.
Twelve lines up with two things everyone knows, the months of the year and the hours on a clock face. A 3 can mean March or three o’clock, so say which one you mean before the spin. For time-telling practice, spin an hour and have each student set a paper clock to it.
For times-table review, spin at the start of each round to choose the row, from the 1s up to the 12s. With “Remove the winner after each spin” switched on, a row you have practiced drops off the wheel, so all twelve rows come up before any repeats. Press “Fill the wheel” to start the cycle again.
What to do with a 1 to 12 spin
- Sharing a dozen party favors among twelve kids: each child spins once with the winner removed and takes the favor with that number.
- Handing each of twelve students a month for a class calendar project, with the winner removed so no month is taken twice.
- Giving a character in a story a birth month before you start writing.
- Choosing which of a dozen numbered cupcakes gets the birthday candle.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the random number 1 to 12 wheel
- Can it pick a random month?
- Yes, if you read the number as a month: 1 is January and 12 is December. If you would rather see the names on the slices, the Month Wheel has them.
- Can I use it in place of a twelve-sided die?
- Yes, as a substitute. Twelve equal slices give each number from 1 to 12 a 1 in 12 chance, the same odds a fair twelve-sided die gives each face.
- How do I make a whole times-table problem?
- Spin twice. The first number is the row and the second is what you multiply it by, so a 7 and then a 4 means 7 times 4.
- Can I make it 0 to 11 for a different clock game?
- Yes. Set “Lowest number” to 0 and “Highest number” to 11, then press “Fill the wheel”. Any span of whole numbers works, up to 1,000 numbers, and negative ones load too.
