About the random number 1 to 15 wheel

On this wheel are the whole numbers 1 through 15, 15 slices of the same size. You won’t find ready lists here or a second printout of the numbers below; the list box next to the wheel holds them, one per line. Each spin gives every number the same 1 in 15 chance, or 6.67%.

A class of fifteen fits the wheel when students go by roster number. Give each student the number next to their name on the class list, and the spin calls on someone without putting any names up on a shared screen.

For a review sheet of fifteen questions, switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” before class starts. Each spin chooses the next question to go over. A question you have covered leaves the wheel, so the class works through the whole sheet in a random order and never does one twice.

Fifteen-number uses for class and home

  • Drawing one of fifteen numbered raffle tickets at a class party or a school fair.
  • Letting the spin set a break of 1 to 15 minutes, timed on the classroom clock.
  • Choosing which of fifteen spelling words a student has to use in a sentence.
  • Setting the order of fifteen science fair presentations, one spin per time slot with the winner removed.

How to use the wheel

  1. Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
  3. Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.

How the pick is made

Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.

Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.

Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the random number 1 to 15 wheel

What do I do when a student is absent?
Take that number off for the day by deleting its line in the list box. When everyone is back, press “Fill the wheel” to load all fifteen again.
How do I draw first, second and third place from fifteen tickets?
Switch on “Remove the winner after each spin” and spin three times. The first number drawn takes first place, and a ticket that has won leaves the wheel, so it cannot take second or third as well.
What if a new student joins the class?
Raise “Highest number” by one and press “Fill the wheel”, or type the new number on its own line in the list box. Either way the new slice gets the same chance as the rest.
Can the class see how many numbers are left?
Yes. The line under the wheel counts the entries still on it and gives each one’s chance, so with the winner removed the count goes down after every draw.
