About the random number 1 to 16 wheel
Sixteen whole numbers, 1 to 16, share this wheel in slices of equal size. The page has no ready lists and does not set the numbers out again below the wheel; you find all 16 in the list box. On each spin a number has a 1 in 16 chance, shown under the wheel as 6.25%.
Sixteen halves cleanly to eight, then four, two and one. A knockout bracket of sixteen therefore pairs everyone up in every round, with nobody left over, until a single winner remains. The same number makes a neat four-by-four grid.
To seed a bracket at random, number the sixteen first-round lines 1 to 16 and switch on “Remove the winner after each spin”. Spin once for each team and write its name on the line with that number. A line that is filled has left the wheel, so two teams never land in the same place.
Picks that need sixteen numbers
- Choosing a square on a four-by-four choice board of reading or math tasks.
- Turning over a card in a memory game laid out in four rows of four, with the spots numbered 1 to 16.
- Splitting sixteen students into four groups of four: with the winner removed, the first four numbers drawn make group one, and so on.
- Picking which of sixteen flash cards the next player has to answer.
How to use the wheel
- Type or paste your options, one per line. The wheel redraws as you type.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl+Enter while you are in the list.
- Read the pick. Remove it from the wheel if nobody should be picked twice, then spin again.
How the pick is made
Before the wheel moves, your browser draws one slice at random with crypto.getRandomValues, the same generator browsers use for security keys. Every slice has the same chance. The spin you watch only plays that result out.
Nothing about the animation changes the outcome: not how hard you click, not how long the wheel turns, not the size of your screen. The pointer always stops inside a slice, never on a line.
Your list stays in your browser. A link you copy carries the list inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about the random number 1 to 16 wheel
- Does number 1 mean the top seed?
- Only if you decide it does. The wheel draws a number, and what 1 or 16 means on your bracket is up to you.
- Can I use it for a smaller or bigger bracket?
- Yes. Change “Highest number”, to 8 for a smaller bracket or higher for a bigger one, and press “Fill the wheel”. Up to 1,000 numbers fit.
- Can I put team names on the slices instead?
- Yes. Clear the list and type the sixteen names, one per line, and the wheel redraws with a slice for each. “Copy link to this wheel” then makes a link that opens those names on another device.
- Can I check the whole seeding after the draw?
- Yes. The Results tab lists the numbers of this visit in the order they came up, so the first one belongs to the first team you spun for.
